"In the School Band" by David L. Harrison

Here is a "poem movie" for David L. Harrison's poem, "In the School Band," created by graduate student Amanda Butler. Watch it here.

This poem is featured in The Poetry Friday Anthology for Middle School in the eighth grade section, week 2, for the theme, "More School."

  1. Fun! I love that poem--what a great example of irony. "First chair practices every night. / When does he watch TV?" . . . well, um . . . maybe that's why he's First Chair?

Kids might enjoy seeing a second version of this poem in the poet's own video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eZr6ORgqayY (David Harrison is QUITE a talented actor, as is his "stern music teacher" wife Sandy!)

  3. Great job, Amanda. And considering I have a grandson who plays trombone, I know who else is going to like this. Thanks!
